"Up Smith Creek" is the eight episode of Season 3, and the 34th overall. It originally aired on December 14, 2012 as the Mid-Season Finale.


With the season nearing halfway over, the Hoffman Crew's investor, Jason, is on his way to see if they reached the 100oz goal. However, with a bad motor on the new trommel, it is up to Dave Turin on Indian River to ge the remaining 7oz. After a short in the electrical box, the crew and Jason watch as they do the final clean out to please the investor. The clean out reveals they have received 21oz, bringing them to 115oz. Jason then wagers a friendly bet of a total of 350oz for the next 3 weeks.

In Porcupine Creek, "Dakota" Fred and his crew reach bedrock on the glory hole. They discover that the bedrock is smooth, which is very unusual. Despite this, they are able to get 18oz from the hole.

At the Big Nugget Mine, Parker Schnabel begins to mine the Smith Creek Hill. Test pans deliver no gold, so he calls in Tony Beet to get his advice. Tony suggests that he drill holes to test for gold. Parker does this, and discovers that the hill has no gold, and actually has been mined before, s a fact that shocks Parker. When he goes to tell his grandfather John Schnabel the bad news, he is unable to when he discovers that John has more health problems, and will be going into surgery. Parker leaves, pondering what to do next.
